Group Swim Lessons
We offer group swim lessons for all ages. Lessons are taught by American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors.
Cost
Our 2024 group rates are listed below. For child lessons, only children and grandchildren of current 91¶ÌÊÓƵ students and Student Recreation Center members may get the member rate. 91¶ÌÊÓƵ employees who are not members of the SRC will pay the non-member rate.

Refund and Cancellation Policy
- A full refund will be granted if requested by two weeks before the start of your swim session.
- A 50% refund will be granted if requested by one week before the start of your swim session.
- No refunds are granted less than one week before your swim session, although you may reschedule to another 2024 swim session based on space availability.
Fill out our refund form to request a refund/cancellation. Once a swim session begins, there are no refunds or rescheduling. There is no pro-rated cost if your child cannot attend the entire swim session. Lessons that are canceled due to weather will be rescheduled.
Registration
Register for all sessions via our Campus Recreation Portal. Payment is due in full at the time of registration.
If you have trouble using our portal, we will be happy to meet you at the front desk of the Student Recreation Center to help you register and pay. Please email aquatics@southalabama.edu to set up an appointment. Per university policy, we are unable to take credit card payments over the phone.
Waiver
All swim lesson participants must digitally sign this waiver. The waiver is good for one year and must be on file before the start of a swim session. A parent or guardian must sign the waiver for members and guests under age 18.
Class Descriptions
Adult Level 1 is for anyone ages 14 and up. If you have never learned how to swim, or do not feel comfortable being in or around the water without a flotation device, this level is for you.
Skills learned:
- Entering and exiting the water safely from the pool deck/wall walking
- Bobbing and finning
- Breathing through mouth and nose
- Putting face in the water while swimming
- Front float, back float, assisted and unassisted glides on front and back
- Swimming with alternating arms on front (front crawl) and back (back crawl) with flutter kicks
- Breaststroke arms and legs.
Adult Level 2 builds on the skills learned in the beginner class (Adult Level 1) and is for anyone ages 14 and up. Must have taken our Adult Level 1 lessons or a beginner lesson at another facility, and you must be able to put your whole face in the water and swim with alternating arms across pool.
Skills learned:
- Entering the water by jumping in
- Holding front and back floats for five seconds unassisted
- Water safety skills such as front glide, roll over and fin on back
- Elementary backstroke, backstroke arms and flutter kick refined
- Breast stroke pulls and kicks refined
- Front crawl with alternating arms, flutter kick, and rotary breathing
- Tread water with sculling arms.
Parent/Child is for children ages 10 months-3 years and their parents/grandparents. Comfort in the water will be taught through songs, play, and exploration of the water. Mommies, daddies, grandmothers, grandfathers, or guardians must attend class with the child. Safety holds, songs, use of water toys, and safety lessons are taught throughout the course.
Level 2 will build on what was taught in Level 1.
Cubbies Level 1 is for non-swimmers. If your child has never taken swim lessons, or has taken swim lessons but cannot swim without a flotation device, or is afraid of the water, please register for this level.
Minimum age is 3 years old, maximum age is 5 for this level. Child must have turned 3 before the first day of class to enroll.
Skills learned:
- Enter and exit the water safely from the pool deck
- Blow bubbles through the mouth and nose
- Putting face in the water while swimming
- Picking up toys under the water (breathing drill)
- Safety skills such as bobbing (jumping like Tigger)
- Front float, back float, assisted glides on front and back
- Swimming with alternating arms on front and flutter kick assisted (front crawl)
- Froggie kicking (breaststroke) with streamline arms and arm pulls
- Assisted finning on back
- Important safety topics
Minimum age is 3 years old, maximum age is 5 for this level. Child must have turned 3 before the first day of class to enroll. Child must have gone through our Cubbies Level 1 class or had prior swim lessons with another facility. Child must be able to swim a few strokes without a floatie, and be able to put whole face in the water and blow bubbles.
Skills learned:
- Entering the water by jumping in
- Holding front and back floats for five seconds unassisted
- Front glide, roll over and fin on back (Level 2 safety skill)
- Swim on front roll over, fin on back, roll over again and swim on front
- Froggie (breast stroke) kicking with simultaneous arm pulls
- Swimming on front with alternating arms and flutter kick unassisted (front crawl)
- Swimming on back with alternating arms and flutter kicks (backstroke)
- Treading water
Junior Jags Level 1 is for non-swimmers. Child must be between the ages of 6 and 13 before the first day of class.
Skills learned:
- Entering and exiting the water safely from the pool deck/wall walking
- Level 1 safety skill (bobbing)
- Breathing through the mouth and nose
- Putting face in the water while swimming
- Picking up objects from under the water
- Front float, back float, assisted and unassisted glides on front and back
- Swimming with alternating arms on front (front crawl) and back (back crawl) with flutter kicks
- Breaststroke arms and legs
- Finning on back.
Child must be between the ages of 6 and 13 before the first day of class. Child must have taken our Level 1 class or taken lessons from another facility. Child must be able to swim a few strokes without assistance and be able to put whole face in the water and blow bubbles.
Skills learned:
- Entering the water by jumping in
- Holding front and back floats for five seconds unassisted
- Front glide, roll over and fin on back (Level 2 safety skill)
- Backstroke arms and flutter kick
- Breast stroke pulls and kick
- Front crawl with alternating arms and flutter kick
- Front crawl, roll over, fin on back, roll back over to swim on front
- Tread water with sculling arms.
Child must be between the ages of 6 and13 before the first day of class. Child must have taken our Level 2 class before registering for Level 3 (no other swim lessons apply).
Skills learned:
- Entering the water by jumping in
- Deep water dives
- Picking up toys from the pool bottom
- Jellyfish and tuck floats
- Refining all strokes (back crawl, breaststroke, and front crawl)
- Elementary backstroke
- Rotary breathing
