Clinical Math Requirements for BSN Students

All students entering any undergraduate BSN clinical course must demonstrate dosage calculation proficiency at the end of the semester immediately preceding a clinical course.

Details

Drug calculation proficiency may be demonstrated via two means: successfully completing the Medication Administration Course (HSC 342) or scoring 100% on a Dosage Progression exam.

Successfully completing the Medication Administration Course serves to demonstrate proficiency only for the first consecutive calendar semester following completion of the Medication Administration course. Therefore only students currently enrolled in HSC 342, Medication Administration, are exempt from taking the Dosage Progression exam in order to enter a clinical course. If you must re-enroll in any clinical course you must take the Dosage Progression exam at the end of the semester immediately before entering the clinical course.

Dosage Progression Exams are offered during the end of the semester. Two dates are offered for the first attempt Dosage Progression Exam. Students have the option of attending either of the two first attempt dates. Only one second attempt date is offered. Therefore, all students needing a second attempt must attend the Dosage Progression Exam on the second attempt date and time. Exam locations are located in the Sakai Dose Progression website. Please contact Dr. Wright or Dr. Lynch if you need to be added to the site.

Students currently enrolled in NU 301 or MCN 348 will test in class as assigned by the course faculty.

Students not currently enrolled in NU 301 or MCN 348 need to sign up for the first attempt exam. Students will need to sign up for the second attempt exam, if needed.

ALL students who are unsuccessful on the first attempt will need to sign up for the second attempt exam. Use the Sign Up tool, located in the Sakai Dose Progression site, to register for your second attempt. Please contact Dr. Wright of Dr. Lynch if you need to be added to the site. Deadlines for the exam sign up dates are located in the Dose Progression Sakai site.

A passing score of 100% on the Dose Progression exam offered THIS semester is required for any student entering NU301 not currently enrolled in HSC342, MCN348, or AHN448 next semester. No make up examinations will be offered. If special testing accommodations are needed, you must contact Dr. Theresa Wright or Dr. Colleen Lynch at least 48 hours prior to the exam.

Students who are unsuccessful on one of the two attempts have the option to complete remediation and take two additional attempts on the Dosage Progression Exam. The remediation and additional tests occur after the last day of final examinations according to the University’s academic calendar. Students must score 100% on one of the exams to enter clinical. The remediation process information is found in the Dosage Progression Exam Sakai Site.

Please contact Dr. Theresa Wright (twright@southalabama.edu) with any questions.
