Student Says Practical Values of Philosophy Add Up

Jahdia Feurtado

鈥淎 lot of philosophers are mathematicians,鈥 observed Jahdia Feurtado. That list would include, among others, Aristotle, Ren茅 Descartes, Blaise Pascal, Bertrand Russell 鈥 and Jahdia Feurtado, a University of South Alabama double major in mathematics and philosophy.

The two disciplines have more in common than you鈥檇 think, said Feurtado (who pronounces her first name 鈥渏uh-DYE-uh鈥). 鈥淚鈥檝e actually taken math classes that have taught the same things as some of my philosophy classes.鈥 And her first-ever philosophy class explored symbolic logic, which uses symbols and mathematical variables instead of language to increase the precision of logical expressions.

Feurtado is from Saraland, just north of Mobile, so South was practically her hometown university. Also, 鈥淭hey gave me the best scholarship.鈥

鈥淚t helps you to think more logically, to solve more problems.鈥

She鈥檚 happy with her choice of universities. 鈥淚 genuinely love the philosophy department at South,鈥 she said. 鈥淎ll of the people are nice. They鈥檙e understanding. They鈥檒l help you if you need help. They are really good people.鈥

She contended that learning philosophy has great practical value. 鈥淚t helps you to think more logically, to solve more problems,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely helped me with my writing, with figuring out different arguments to support my positions, with seeing different points of view.

鈥淚 think that鈥檚 something you need in all careers.鈥

Feurtado hoped to test that theory by working in the financial industry after graduation. She planned to learn the business by working for a financial services company, then eventually strike off on her own as a financial advisor.

That job requires not only financial acumen but also additional skills, including a philosopher鈥檚 ability to fairly examine others鈥 beliefs, to help them understand flaws in those beliefs and to cut to the heart of an issue. 鈥淛ust for problem-solving in general,鈥 Feurtado said, 鈥淚 think philosophy helps tremendously.鈥
