Quintuplet Focuses on Early Childhood
For an education course at South, Sophia Zimlich observed a second-grade class, which was something new for a student who was home-schooled as a child in Saraland, Alabama. It was also Zimlich鈥檚 first time in the field, a pivotal moment for education students.
鈥淚t was cool to see everything in a different setting,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he class was really structured, and the teacher was good at keeping them on task. I was really impressed by the technology.鈥
Zimlich was completing work on a bachelor鈥檚 degree in early childhood studies. Next would be an internship at a preschool or early learning center.
She was one of five Zimlich quintuplets who enrolled at the University of South Alabama. Their enrollment in 2018 made news. 鈥淢y freshman year, I鈥檇 hear it all the time,鈥 she said. 鈥淧eople would say, 鈥業 recognize you 鈥 you鈥檙e one of the quintuplets!鈥欌
Things calmed down, though some would still catch her last name.
鈥淚鈥檝e always known this is what I want to do.鈥
Zimlich has worked with Jaguar Productions (the student activities board) and has been a summer camp counselor at the Student Recreation Center. For fun, she took dance classes.
鈥淚鈥檝e done ballroom, swing dancing and an advanced combo class 鈥 ballet, jazz and contemporary,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really fun.鈥
Her education classes could be challenging. The more she learned, the more she realized how much more there is to know. Take, for instance, the class in language development.
鈥淭here鈥檝e been so many interesting things, all the details of development, that I鈥檇 never thought of before,鈥 she said. 鈥淎ll the different aspects of birth through adolescence, all the different theories. There鈥檚 so much, and it鈥檚 all really interesting.
鈥淎nd it definitely reinforced the idea that this is the right major for me. I鈥檝e always known this is what I want to do.鈥
