Services

Our Mission:
The mission of the Student Health Center (SHC) at the University of South Alabama is to provide efficient and cost effective healthcare services relevant to the needs of the University Community. We strive to accomplish this through health education, health promotion and primary medical care.

Services we offer:
Please select a service from the drop-down list for more information.

Allergy:
The student health center administers allergy injections to students under the direction of their allergist or other physicians. We do not administer initial allergy tests.

Clinic:
The Student Health Center is staffed with fully licensed professional healthcare providers who specialize in providing services to the college age population. We also believe that there is more to creating a healthy campus than just taking care of sick students. Wellness programs and assistance in the management of many conditions are available at your student health center. Walk-in visits are encouraged for any acute or non-emergent visit. However, there are certain issues that we prefer that you make an appointment (e.g. annual physicals, GYN examinations, prescription medication maintenance and chronic or on-going conditions). To avoid unnecessary waits, please call 460-7151 to make an appointment.

Work-in services are available during all hours of operation for non-emergency illnesses. It is important to know that waiting times will vary depending on how busy we are and the availability of staff. We suggest that you come early in the day and bring some reading material or class work to help you pass the time.

Immunizations:
The following immunizations are available at the Student Health Center: Hepatitis B, Twinrix (Hep A and B), Tetanus, Tdap, Influenza, MMR, Meningitis, Varicella and Tb skin tests.

Laboratory:
The student health center laboratory offers a variety of in-house tests that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of most illnesses, and it can also refer tests of almost any type to an outside facility. The department is certified by The Alabama Department of Public Health. We provide testing for strep throat, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases and vaginal infections, mononucleosis, pregnancy, diabetes, routine and employment physicals, heart irregularities and influenza.

Laboratory tests outside the scope of the student health center are sent to LabCorp of America or the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Laboratory. All results are received in a reasonable time.

Pharmacy:
Our healthcare professionals counsel patients about medications that they prescribe and write prescriptions for medications that can fill at any outside pharmacy.

Psychiatric Services:
Psychiatric services include psychiatric evaluation, individual counseling, crisis intervention and pharmacological management. Psychiatric services can be accessed by referrals from Student Health Center providers, Counseling and Testing Services or self referrals.

Sexual Assault Advocacy:
In the event that a sexual assault is perpetrated against a member of the student community on the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ campus, the Student Health Center has a trained victim's advocate on staff to make sure that the victim has a safe place to go, advise the student appropriately about medical evaluation, treatment and counseling.

Women's Health:
Women's health services include routine pelvic exams, pap smears, contraception, treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy testing and counseling. To schedule an appointment, call (251) 460-7151.

X-Ray:
X-ray services are available on campus at the Allied Health Building, 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Freestanding ER on Hillcrest Rd. or by referral at an outside facility.
