National Business Organization Honors Weaver for Lifetime Achievement

Dr. Mark Weaver, holder of the Ben May Chair of Entrepreneurship and the founding director of the Melton Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of South Alabama, has been honored for lifetime achievement by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

Weaver received the Max Wortman Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award at the 91¶ÌÊÓƵSBE 2015 National Conference. The presentation noted Weaver’s leadership in helping to legitimize the field of entrepreneurship as worthy of scholarly inquiry. He has served on the board of countless community organizations, helped establish and build programs at several major universities, published repeatedly at the highest levels and personally recruited and mentored many of the individuals involved today in 91¶ÌÊÓƵSBE’s leadership.

An internationally known scholar and teacher, Weaver has an outstanding record of scholarship with more than 60 published journal articles, more than 160 published proceedings from academic conferences, six books and 20 book chapters. He has served as a visiting scholar or guest lecturer in more than 20 countries, including the University College of Dublin in Ireland and the Oslo Business School in Norway. Weaver has also completed consulting assignments for firms in the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Mexico. He has served as president of the 91¶ÌÊÓƵSBE, the International Council for Small Business and the Small Business Institute Directors associations. He has been the Academy of Management proceedings editor and liaison to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

He came to 91¶ÌÊÓƵ in 2011 from Louisiana State University where he held the Thomas H. Daigre Endowed Chair. Previously, he held the Rohrer Chair of Entrepreneurial Studies at Rowan University and was a professor of management at the University of Alabama.

Weaver received a bachelor’s degree in industrial management and a doctorate in management from LSU.

The Melton Center for Entrepreneurial Studies is supported through a gift from Christopher Melton, a Mitchell College of Business alumnus, in honor of his parents.
