The University of South Alabama Office of Community Engagement is hosting a series of events on Nov. 7-8 for National First-Generation Day, celebrated Nov. 8 to recognize the trailblazing students, faculty and staff who are the first in their families to earn a college degree.
Dreka Caffey, a senior professional health sciences major and African American studies minor from Alabaster, Alabama, said the transition from high school to college as a first-generation student was made easier because of the support offered at South.
鈥淚 have had access to great resources, and I am the recipient of the Campus to Career Scholarship,鈥 Caffey said. 鈥淚 have also built relationships with mentors. I think it is important for first-generation students to attend these celebratory events to connect and gain information about important resources. I am happy to participate in this year鈥檚 first-generation celebration.鈥
Broderick Morrissette, assistant director of strategic initiatives in South鈥檚 Office of Community Engagement, said celebrating first-generation college students is essential for recognizing their achievements and unique challenges.
鈥淭his celebration allows students time to reflect and celebrate their accomplishments because they are paving the way for future generations,鈥 Morrissette said. 鈥淢any of the first-generation students carry the weight of their family on their shoulders. These events support and enrich the environment of all South students.鈥
Events scheduled on South鈥檚 campus include a digital branding workshop, a campus resource fair and a luncheon.
