Teach-In to Highlight Democracy Day
Posted on February 15, 2017
The University of South Alabama College of Arts and Sciences and the Dean of Students office invite the 91Ƶ community to participate in a teach-in on “We Are South: Democracy Day,” 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 17 at the Student Center Plaza/Amphitheater. If there’s inclement weather, the free event will be held in the Student Center.
The discussion will focus on democracy and its role in the academic and larger community.
“This is slated to be an exciting conversation for our campus community,” said Dr. Martha Jane Brazy, associate professor of history. “There will be a welcome and opening remarks before the participants will be invited to share during roundtable breakout sessions on a variety of topics about democracy.”
Participants at each roundtable are invited to share their thoughts and ideas during the breakout sessions which will last 30 minutes. The discussions will be led by students and faculty. Faculty co-facilitators will be present to keep the discussions on topic and ensure that discussions are respectful. After the conclusion of the roundtable breakout sessions, participants will come together and share final thoughts about the conversations and dialogue.
“The teach-in will culminate with a short on-campus march in support of dialogue, diversity, engagement and global democracy,” Brazy noted.
Topics for the discussion will include:
- Global Perspectives on Democracy
- World Democracy and Immigration
- The Bill of Rights
- Diversity in a Democratic Society
- Education and Democracy
- Immigration and Policy
- Historical Nativism and Democracy
- Freedom of Speech
- Media and Democracy
- Reproductive Rights and Democracy
- Gender and Democracy
- Un-written Freedoms: Right to Privacy, the Right to Free Movement
